OVERVIEW:
If your are at least 16 years old, have a current Lifeguard certification and enjoy swimming, maybe you can join the City of Louisville’s Lifeguarding team. These positions will be assigned to the Louisville Recreation Center.
These are regular part-time positions and will work throughout the year and are not subject to seasonal time limits. These are part-time positions and will work no more than 29 hours per week throughout the year.
The shifts available are: Weekdays 5:45 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
This job works under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Supervisors. Lifeguards are responsible for providing public safety supervising and enforcing pool regulations at the cities’ pools.
Lifeguards observe and patrol aquatic’s areas and enforcing safety regulations in a professional, friendly manner. Maintain proper discipline of water safety; perform general pool maintenance and other duties as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Certifications as American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, and AED are required. Must be at least 16 years of age. WSI certification is strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must have knowledge of the principles and practices of water safety, resuscitation, and first aid sufficient to be able to enforce safety regulations and perform lifesaving, first aid and CPR techniques. Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment for self and others. Knowledge of Aquatics department’s rules and lifeguard philosophies, polices and procedures. Skills in communication; applying oral, written, illustrated or demonstration instructions. Good public relations skills and aquatics equipment operation skills. Must have the ability to assist swimmers from the water when in danger. Prevent accidents; remain calm in emergency situations; work with little or no supervision; analyze and correct facility health and safety hazards; learn and adhere to the aquatic division’s emergency procedures. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and facility guests a must.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, in and out of the pool; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be in good physical condition to swim 500 meters and retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the diving well.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor pool environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
